Provisional fatal drug overdose data

National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) Released Monthly Provisional Drug Overdose Data

CDC's National Vital Statistics System released its provisional drug overdose dataA on April 16, 2025, based on data available for analysis on April 6, 2025. The new preliminary data from NVSS predicts 82,059 drugBoverdose deaths and estimates a 26.5% decline in drug overdose deaths in the U.S.C

  1. Preliminary data represent the 12 months ending in November 2024, compared to the 12 months ending in November 2023. This is the most recent national data available.
  2. Please note the use of predicted, not reported deaths. We recommend predicted provisional counts since they are adjusted for incomplete reporting. Predicted counts are also expected to be underestimated, as those counts continue to increase over the first several months after being posted.
  3. Please note that with each provisional data release, all prior estimates are updated to reflect the most current data available, and estimates will differ from the last monthly update.
