Overview

SAPs are intended to add clarity to the respirator approval process described in (also known as 42 CFR Part 84). The NIOSH Respirator Approval Program has developed six individual instructions for each class of respirator.

Please see the appropriate application for the respirator you are submitting. Before submitting a respirator for approval, we recommend that applicants

  • Review the entire SAP. Compliance with all instructions is essential for efficient processing of an application.
  • Check for any new NIOSH Conformity Assessment Notices.
  • Consult the information provided on our How to Apply page if you are not familiar with the application process.

Applicants can contact the NIOSH Records Room with any questions before submitting a respirator for approval.

Fee and Standard Test Procedure information

The SAPs include information on fees and STPs. The pages with that information are identified below for each respirator class. Additionally, there is a page for Respirator Certification Fee Schedules and Standard Testing Procedures.
