Understanding the health of people living in the United States is critical to improving health. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a key source of this information.

It is the only national health survey that combines interviews, health exams, and laboratory tests for participants of all ages. NHANES data helps us—

• Find out how many people have health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure
• Learn what foods, drinks, and supplements people eat, drink, and use
• Understand how diet and habits, like smoking and exercise, affect health

Healthcare providers, government officials, and public health professionals use NHANES results to—

• Increase knowledge about health problems
• Develop health policies
• Create health programs and services

Each year, NHANES experts examine 5,000 people across the United States in mobile exam centers that travel across the country. Each has its own team of highly trained health professionals. Our teams use the most up-to-date methods and equipment for health exams and laboratory tests.

Taking part in NHANES provides benefits for you and your family—

• A free health exam that includes more tests than may be offered in a regular healthcare checkup
• Laboratory testing to find out if you have been exposed to harmful chemicals, like lead or mercury
• Detailed results from your exams you can use or share with your healthcare provider
