Alexander D. Langmuir Lecture
The Langmuir Lecture is the preeminent public health lecture in the United States. First given in 1972, this lecture continues to be a highlight of the annual EIS Conference. The lecture is named for Alexander D. Langmuir, MD, MPH (1910–1993), a public health visionary and leader who established the Epidemiology Program at what was then called the Communicable Disease Center in 1949; he remained as CDC's chief epidemiologist until his retirement in 1970. Notably, Dr. Langmuir founded EIS, established national disease surveillance for the United States, and led the development of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report at CDC. Learn more about Dr. Langmuir and Epidemiology at CDC.
2025 Alexander D. Langmuir Lecturer: Anne Schuchat, MD (RADM, USPHS (Ret.))

Retired US Public Health Service Rear Admiral and former Assistant Surgeon General, Anne Schuchat, MD, will deliver the 2025 Langmuir Lecture on Thursday, April 24, 2025. Her talk is titled, "Consequential Epidemiology: An EIS Love Story."
From 2006–2015, Dr. Schuchat was the first director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD). She first joined CDC as an EIS officer in 1988. She has been instrumental in decades of CDC emergency responses including the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019 outbreak of vaping associated lung injuries, the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, and the 2003 SARS outbreak where she deployed to Beijing. Dr. Schuchat also served as CDC's principal deputy director from 2015–2021 and twice as acting CDC director.
Dr. Schuchat's contributions have been recognized by election to the National Academy of Medicine, receipt of the US Public Health Service (USPHS) Distinguished Service Medal, and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials Lifetime Achievement Award and as a finalist for the Paul A. Volcker Career Achievement Medal from the Partnership for Public Service. Dr. Schuchat retired as a Rear Admiral in the Commissioned Corps of the USPHS in 2018 and from CDC in 2021.
