The figure shows the percentage of adults aged 鈮�18 years in the United States who were current cigarette smokers, by race and ethnicity, based on National Health Interview Survey data for 2004-2008. During that period, 20.5% of adults aged ≥18 years were current cigarette smokers. American Indian /Alaska Native adults (32.7%) were most likely to currently smoke cigarettes, and Asian adults (10.4%) were least likely to be current smokers.

* Current smokers have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and currently smoke every day or some days. Unknowns were not included in the denominators when calculating percentages.

鈥� Race refers to persons who indicated only a single race group and are not of Hispanic ethnicity. Persons of Hispanic ethnicity might be of any race or combination of races.

搂 Estimates are age adjusted using the projected 2000 U.S. population as the standard population and using four age groups: 18--24 years, 25--44 years, 45--64 years, and 鈮�65 years. Estimates are based on household interviews of a sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population.
