What did we do?

  • We used National Syndromic Surveillance Program data from 2021-2023 to identify trends in emergency department (ED) visits from suspected suicide attempts overall and by sex and age group.

What did we find?

  • Overall monthly rates of suspected suicide attempts have decreased since January 2021.
  • Overall, females had higher monthly rates than males. Monthly rates were highest among teens aged 12-17 compared to other age groups.
  • Trends across the study period varied by age group.

Why does it matter?

  • Understanding who is most at risk of attempting suicide can guide the most effective implementation of prevention strategies.
