Staff Bio

Andrea Young, PhD is the acting director of the National Center for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Public Health Infrastructure and Workforce (NCSTLTPHIW), also known as the Public Health Infrastructure Center (PHIC).

Role at CDC

PHIC serves as the connection point between the agency and state, local, and territorial jurisdictions; Tribes; and CDC's public health partners. As acting director, Dr. Young leads a team of experts that sets the strategic direction for PHIC to ensure that our country's public health infrastructure has the people, services, and systems needed to promote and protect health in every US community (all 50 states, the US Territories, tribes, and freely associated states).

Previous experience

Dr. Young has been the director of the Division of Workforce Development in PHIC since June 2024. Prior to this role, she served as the division's deputy director for science starting in October 2022. Dr. Young joined CDC in 2001 and has served in numerous leadership roles across the agency including as associate director for science in the former Center for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support; director of the Division of Library Sciences and Services in the former Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services; and associate director for learning in the former Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response. She has received multiple CDC awards for excellence in science, evaluation, innovation, and collaboration.

Education

Dr. Young earned her doctorate and master's degrees in science from the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems at Florida State University, and a bachelor's degree in sociology from Eckerd College.
