Deron Cornell Burton, MD, JD, MPH (CAPT, USPHS) is the acting director of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at CDC.

Role at CDC
As acting director of NCBDDD, Dr. Burton leads a center that strives to advance the health and well-being of populations we serve.
Previous experience
Dr. Burton has held a variety of leadership roles during his 20-year CDC career, most recently serving as director of the Division of Blood Disorders and Public Health Genomics in NCBDDD. Prior to joining NCBDDD, Dr. Burton served as deputy director of CDC's National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP). He also served as team lead for the Methodology and Analysis Team, Clinical Research Branch, in NCHHSTP's Division of Tuberculosis Elimination. Dr. Burton has worked overseas as head of International Emerging Infections Program activities in western Kenya and has served as a special advisor for infectious diseases to the CDC director. Dr. Burton joined CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in 2004 in the Respiratory Disease Branch, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
Education
Dr. Burton is board certified in preventive medicine, having completed CDC's Preventive Medicine Residency Program assigned to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Burton received his medical doctorate from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2003, a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2002, and his Juris Doctor degree from UCLA School of Law in 1995.
